The Moore Institute for Plastic Pollution Research is seeking two Research Scientists to join our laboratory team. The Moore Institute operates a world-class microplastics laboratory and is the only accredited nonprofit laboratory specializing in microplastic analysis.

Our scientists analyze environmental, consumer, and biological samples for research projects and clients seeking reliable information about microplastic contamination. Typical sample types include drinking water, surface water, stormwater, wastewater, sediment, soil, dust, food, and biological tissues.

Research Scientists will participate in all stages of laboratory analysis, including:

  • Preparing client and research samples for microplastic analysis
  • Performing chemical and enzymatic digestion of organic material
  • Filtering samples and isolating suspected particles
  • Conducting visual microscopy and particle characterization
  • Identifying polymers using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy
  • Following quality assurance, quality control, and contamination-prevention procedures
  • Maintaining complete and accurate laboratory records
  • Processing, reviewing, and organizing analytical data
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment, supplies, and workspaces
  • Contributing to research studies, method development, technical reports, and scientific publications
  • Communicating with laboratory staff, project managers, researchers, and clients
  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, environmental science, biology, materials science, or a related scientific field
  • Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, defensible data
  • Ability to follow written procedures and maintain organized laboratory records
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to legally work in the United States
  • Master of Science degree in a relevant field
  • Experience with microplastic analysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, analytical chemistry, or environmental sample preparation
  • Familiarity with laboratory quality assurance and quality control systems
  • Experience working in an accredited laboratory
  • Experience analyzing data or contributing to scientific reports and publications

The annual salary range is $40,000–$80,000, depending on education, laboratory experience, technical expertise, and demonstrated ability.
